戰亂的分離，親人的隔絕，是兩岸上世紀的悲劇，身為東北媳婦的國民黨立委李彥秀，從七、八年前開始，陪著先生侯冠群返鄉掃墓探親，除了幫忙先生安置祖墳，完成父執輩的心願外，這幾年她也藉機帶著女兒進行尋根之旅，她希望讓年輕新的一代，能夠正視歷史的脈絡，了解過去的史實。
李彥秀回憶到，大概是從七、八年前開始，她陪著侯冠群回東北去掃墓，這個一直是侯冠群爺爺的心願，可惜的是，爺爺在有生之年，都沒有機會回到東北去看自己的祖先墓地，身為長子嫡孫的侯冠群，非常希望能夠代替爺爺完成心願。
李彥秀說，侯冠群老家是東北望族，一場文化大革命之後，讓侯家家道中落，祖先的墓地不僅破落不堪，有些散落各地，甚至連牌位都找不到，侯冠群這幾年花了很多的時間和金錢，透過很多關係，才把祖先墓地安置好，這個也算是代替爺爺和父親完成心願。
李彥秀感嘆地說，「兩岸交流相隔40年才開放，很多長輩在世的時候，沒辦法完成這些事情，身為晚輩代為完成，也算彌補兩岸相隔這麼多年的遺憾。」
談到陪先生返鄉，李彥秀特別提到，兩岸的狀況差異性當然很大，侯冠群因為在台灣的家人非常少，她從來不知道侯冠群在東北有一大家族，「回到家之後，所有不管哪幾房的親戚全都到了，非常熱鬧，雖然完全都不認識，但面貌輪廓還是可以找到一些共同點。」
讓李彥秀印象深刻的是，東北人長的個高高的，嗓門非常大，東北人還是講家鄉話，而且講話非常快，她一開始聽不懂，不過經過這幾年慢慢的溝通，每年的電話聯絡，還有每年都回去一次，慢慢聽多就懂了，「總是家人嘛，多溝通關係就更近了。」
這幾年隨著女兒漸漸長大，她也藉機帶著女兒跟著侯冠群返鄉掃墓、探親，李彥秀說，有機會可以教育下一代，「她有一半的血緣是來自哪裡」，帶著她尋根、了解父親那一輩的血脈關係，以後等他們都不在了，女兒若有意，可以自己去找她的表親。她還半開玩笑的跟女兒說，「以後在外面跟人家打架，記得回東北找家人。」
回想起這幾年返鄉探親，李彥秀感性地說，雖然她是本土在地的台灣人，但有機會親眼目睹40年前年輕的新兵，經過歲月的洗禮變成老兵，相隔這麼多年的情感，兩岸交流勢必要重新不斷地凝聚，這是有一些的歷史脈絡，她也希望年輕新的一代重視過去的歷史，了解過去的史實，用這樣的出發點，來看未來兩岸交流下一步如何走，對兩岸才是有利的。
